Challenges of Becoming A Hairstylist

Becoming a successful Hairstylist or MakeupArtist is not as easy as everyone thinks. It can be very difficult especially if you’re working in the wrong salon. Success is also a matter of perspective…what does a successful artist or stylist look to you? You need to define what success means to you. Screen Shot 2017-01-12 at 10.05.05 PM.png

Do you see yourself becoming a senior stylist in a salon with a huge clientele?

Or do you see yourself being a celebrity stylist traveling all over the place?

Do you see yourself in a high-end salon or in a small around the corner Mom & Pop Shop?

Do you want to just style hair or do you just want to be a colorist?

These are questions you need to ask yourself. Envision yourself in complete detail of what you want. If you can’t come up with an answer, go out & venture. Find the answers. Work for a small shop, work for a high end salon and you’ll see there is a huge difference.

People think that beauty school teaches you everything you need to know but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. They teach you the very basics at beauty school & then you are off on your own. Your education should be continued with workshops and certifications.

You need to find a salon that has a structured educational program. If they don’t have one, becoming a hairstylist might become very difficult. Sometimes salon owners will just throw you in the water & see if you swim or sink (figuratively speaking of course). Some people will promise you workshops & paying for all your continuing education to only find out they lied to you. Some salons are willing to only pay half of your education & expect you to put up the rest.

Furthering your education is not cheap at all, especially if you’re going to New York and taking a Vidal Sasoon Haircutting class which is about $800.

Expect working long hours when you are first starting out as an assistant. You should never be put directly in a chair because you need to build a strong foundation first.

In order to become a stylist you need patience & perseverance. Keep your eyes on your dream & keep working towards it.

Lots of Love & Wish you much Success <3
